Jio Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet to India
Reliance Jio, India's largest telecom operator, has announced a partnership with SpaceX to offer Starlink satellite broadband services in India. The collaboration aims to expand Jio’s internet reach, particularly in remote areas, by selling Starlink equipment through its retail and online platforms.
Regulatory Approvals Required
The deal is subject to approval from Indian authorities. Jio will also support installation and activation of Starlink equipment to ensure a smooth customer experience.
Airtel's Similar Move
Earlier the same day, Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, also announced a partnership with SpaceX to provide Starlink services, pending regulatory approval.
Jio’s Expansion Plans
Beyond consumer services, Jio plans to offer Starlink’s internet to businesses and explore further collaborations with SpaceX. Despite working with Starlink, Jio continues to develop its own satellite broadband service, JioSpaceFiber, launched in partnership with SES.
Starlink's Journey in India
This is SpaceX's second attempt at entering the Indian market. In 2022, it had to refund preorders after the government flagged regulatory violations. Now, with Jio and Airtel’s support, Starlink's entry could be smoother.
What’s Next?
Both Jio and Airtel had previously opposed easing Starlink’s entry into India through administrative means instead of an auction. However, they now seem aligned in bringing satellite broadband to more users.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell expressed optimism, stating, “We look forward to working with Jio and securing government approval to provide Starlink’s high-speed internet across India.”
